Lady Gaga’s meat dress was just one of the many intriguing getups she sported at this year’s Video Music Awards. Now fans and curious minds alike are seeking more photos and video of the outfit.
You can always count on her to make outrageous fashion statements at highly publicized events—and this year’s show was no exception. Not surprisingly, though, the dress became red meat for critics, who say it was a tad insensitive.
The donning of Lady Gaga’s meat dress wasn’t the first time the pop sensation has worn raw meat. In fact, she was just featured on the cover of Vogue Hommes Japan in a meat bikini. So what gives? I mean, isn’t she a major advocate for all things PC?
The singer took a moment to explain herself to Ellen, who just so happens to be a vegan:
“Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian….it has many interpretations but for me this evening. If we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our own bones. And, I am not a piece of meat.”
I must say making a statement about the reification of women using raw meat is a new one, but if there’s one pop star who can pull it off, it’s got to be Gaga.
As can be expected, PETA has already launched a few rockets at the singer, telling TMZ:
“(She) has a hard time being ‘over the top,’ and wearing a dress made from cuts of dead cows is offensive enough to bring comment…after time spent under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh that it is and likely be crawling in maggots.”
So, is this an issue for PETA or the health inspector?
