Tavi Gevinson’s blog Style Rookie has taken the fashion world by storm. At only 13, Gevinson’s style, and wit has taken her from rookie to pro.
Her site started with pictures of her everyday fashion choices. Then ventured into her opinions about the fashion world. The teenager’s blog was so clever and in touch with trends that some people actually thought it was phony. It now has over 1 million visits a month.
Tavi’s surprisingly on point commentary has led to some serious clout. The girl gets around; she was at Fashion Week in New York this year, and she’s even hitting the cover of a major fashion mag. Her blogging has now become more than a hobby, with Pop’s Magazine paying her to write about her experience at the fashion week shows.
So is this too much for a 13-year-old? Some have expressed that sentiment, but her parents seem to be completely on board. Her father, who says “I’m very surprised at how things have blown up,” actually escorted her to NY to take part in the excitement.
Her story is a true testament to the impact of the social media revolution. Forget making the all-star team in little league softball, she’s schmoozing with the big wigs at one of the top fashion events in the world—and it all stemmed from her ability to connect with an online audience.
Here’s what Tavi had to say about her experience in NY:
“For one week I was in a utopia full of people who can recognize that my jacket is Luella and appreciate that I stuck an upside-down doll in its chest pocket.”
Her writing is actually quite good, and succinct I might add. At 13, it’s hard to believe that she has the capacity to purvey such insight, but it comes off naturally on her site. Here’s a snippet of a recent post:
“Over this past year I have become increasingly interested in clothing, and have developed a clearer understanding of the idea that clothing can be art…Using fashion as self-expression can go beyond wearing a shirt with a slogan, as clothing has the ability to evoke an entire feel, or atmosphere, or emotion, or world.”

This story reminds me of “The Emperor’s New Clothes.” “Aren’t they beautiful, etc.” lol Horrible look on this page! But, truth be told, we certainly need some new designers because for the last 2-3 years the clothes are so ugly that I, nor any of my friends, are buying them.

You have got to be kidding! Is this a joke? this child looks like she raided her grandfather’s closet and then went to her Mom’s closet and wore the clothes.

I tend to agree that you have made a lot of nothing out of this whole thing. This may be fun as it should be at her age but it is not fashionable. Sorry…..

This girl is totally fashionable! Think of Sex in the City, among others! You are probably OLD that is 30is and over if you do not see the fashion in her work. The outfit of her with the hat on her head, skirt and pinkish blue leggings are great. I have also seen other pictures of her in which her style is wonderful. I believe in general some fashion sense appeals to specific ‘generations’ and her fashion sense definitely appeals to the teen, twenty and some thirty year olds. The glory of it is that I could be forty years old and still rocking this style. It is wonderful!

Tavi mixes common older fabrics, she mixes the old in new ways which at first blush is odd but cute- and then you realize sophisticated, thrifty and not over the top - not “I’m so spending big bucks fashion”. What’s wonderful about her fashion is that it doesn’t take alot of money to pull if off, you look sophisticated, and there is alot of style-punch there. It takes a fashion newbie or someone stuck in traditional fashion habits to overlook this!

I love her…She will be the one running her generations major Fashion Magazines “Vogue” perhaps.
“Those who sleep…misses all the fun!”
Fashion is a personality and she has a big one.

Tavi’s ecletic sort of fashion is creates a new american renaissance and its items which I could wear at work- perhaps tone down the colors of the leggings and make sure the clothing is not too big. I’d love to see her work be created into a fashion line- I would welcome it. Her fashion is unexpected but brilliant. It gives people hope that you don’t have to spend big bucks to achieve high fashion. Many fashion designers today you have to spend $150 or more for a shirt. Who can afford that in order to have a complete wardrobe?!! I lend much applause to Tavi. Tavi has taken the old and made it new by her sense of fashion. Creativity is key in her views. I like the fact that I could go to work and would not have to buy a whole new ’suit’ at $80 to $100 dollars. Her style is not only thrifty to afford, but very versatile- you can mix different items to acheive different combinations and maximize the use of your closet. This type of fashion is reinstating closet usefulness- that is out of six to seven clothing pieces you could have thirty different combinations! It so effortless!

You’ve got to be kidding! This is a mess!! The clothing doesn’t fit and what’s with the big clunky boots?? She looks like a child playing dress up. Fashionista, my Aunt Fanny…
