A dad won’t face life sentence for son’s tattoo of a gang sign. Instead, this dad faces a lesser sentence after allowing his son to get the tattoo.

This is the kind of story that can make you lose your lunch. When this situation first made the news, it was reported that a father held his 7-year-old boy down and had someone forcibly tattoo a gang symbol on him. That caused major outrage nationwide. Well, it appears there is insufficient evidence to prove that it was forced. Now the story goes that this “father of the year” took his son along with him, and that the boy wanted to be inked so he could be like his father.

Enrique Gonzalez and his friend belong to a gang called the Fresno Bulldogs. They were originally being charged with “aggravated mayhem,” which usually involves an act of “permanent and painful disfigurement.” Instead, they were charged with the less severe crime of “cruel and inhumane treatment of a child,” which carries a maximum sentence of ten years in prison.

I think it’s disgusting and deplorable to allow your son to have a gang sign tattooed on him—forced or not. I agree that the men should have faced a much more severe penalty had the prosecution been able to prove that it was forced on the child, but now subjecting the boy to the pain of having it laser removed should count for something. Not to mention that it was reportedly done by an amateur tattoo artist at his home. That brings a whole other host of problems, such as the risk of Hepatitis and other diseases. And how sad is it that one of the boy’s aspirations was to be like his gangbanging father? Doesn’t it put the boy at risk to even let him live with the man? Obviously at only 7, he had some idea of what kind of lifestyle his father was leading.

Let’s hope the boy can grow up and avoid the gang lifestyle completely.
