The last thing we need is confusion with regard to the early detection of one of the biggest threats to women’s health in existence. That’s exactly what has happened now that a Government task force has seemingly contradicted the American Cancer Society’s guidelines regarding when women should go for a mammogram.
For more than 20 years, the standard advice that women have received is that they should begin to have regular mammograms starting at age 40. So the notion that they could wait until age 50 is perplexing, especially because many women have been diagnosed with breast cancer in their 30s or even younger.
